iPhone Ultra vs Galaxy Z Fold 8: Which Foldable Should You Actually Buy?

Up front: We make cases for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold line and we do not make an iPhone case. That is a commercial interest and you should weigh what follows knowing it. We have tried to be useful anyway, including where that means telling you to buy the Apple. Apple confirms the iPhone Ultra on 9 September 2026 — every Apple figure below is from published reports, not fact. Last updated 28 August 2026.

This is the first year the question is real. Until now, "should I buy a foldable" meant "should I buy a Samsung". From 9 September there is an actual choice, and the honest answer depends less on specs than on what you already own.

The 30-second answer

Buy the Galaxy Z Fold 8 if you already use Android, you want a device that ships today, and you want a mature accessory ecosystem. You can buy a properly fitted case this afternoon.

Wait for the iPhone Ultra if you are deep in Apple's ecosystem — Watch, AirPods, Mac, iMessage. Switching platforms to get a foldable is a bigger cost than most spec comparisons admit.

Buy neither yet if this would be your first foldable and you are not sure the form factor suits you. Both are around A$3,000. That is a lot to spend discovering you prefer a slab.

What we can actually compare, and what we can't

The Z Fold 8 has been shipping since late July. We have measured it, tooled cases for it and handled retail units.

The iPhone Ultra has not been announced. Everything below in the Apple column comes from published reports and could be wrong. We have marked it accordingly rather than pretending the two columns carry equal weight.

The gap nobody factors in

Spec comparisons treat accessories as an afterthought. On a A$3,000 folding device they are not.

Buy a Z Fold 8 today and you can have a hinge-cover case, a magnetic ring case, a rugged case or a keyboard folio by the end of the week — all measured against real retail units, all with the tolerances checked.

Buy an iPhone Ultra on launch day and your options are Apple's own case, or a third-party case tooled from leaked drawings by someone who has never held the device. We wrote separately about why the reported 13.9 mm camera bump makes that particularly risky.

That gap closes — three to four weeks after retail availability, roughly. But it is a real cost of being early, and it is worth pricing in rather than discovering.

The camera question

On the reported numbers this is not close. The Z Fold 8 Ultra carries a 200 MP main plus a 10 MP 3× telephoto. The iPhone Ultra is reported as dual 48 MP with no telephoto at all — reports suggest there simply isn't depth for a periscope in the folded body.

Two caveats worth holding. Apple's computational processing has repeatedly outperformed higher megapixel counts on paper, so sensor specs alone have never predicted iPhone output well. And these are reports, not confirmed specs.

But if you shoot at distance — sport, wildlife, kids across a field — a device with no optical telephoto is a real limitation regardless of processing.

Touch ID, and why it matters more than it sounds

Reports indicate Apple is using a Touch ID power button rather than Face ID, on the basis that the folded design leaves no room for the TrueDepth array.

For daily use that is close to neutral — many people prefer a fingerprint on a folding phone, since you unlock it in more orientations. For accessories it is not neutral at all. A power button that doubles as a fingerprint sensor needs a precisely sized cutout rather than a covered membrane. Cover it even slightly and the sensor stops reading reliably.

It is exactly the kind of detail that separates a case measured against a real device from one guessed from a schematic.

Switching costs, honestly

If you are on iOS and considering the Z Fold 8, the specs favour Samsung on nearly every line. The specs are also not the whole decision.

Moving platforms means iMessage, your Watch, AirPods pairing behaviour, purchased apps, and whatever you have in Photos. None of that is insurmountable and plenty of people do it. But "the Samsung has a better telephoto" is a thin reason to absorb all of it.

The reverse holds too. If you are on Android, waiting until 9 September to buy an Apple foldable means waiting again for cases, and starting your accessory collection from nothing.

What we would actually do

1. Already on Android? Buy the Z Fold 8. It ships today, the camera is stronger on paper, and the accessory ecosystem is mature.
2. Already on iOS? Wait for the 9th. Not because the iPhone Ultra will be better — because leaving Apple's ecosystem costs more than the spec gap is worth.
3. First foldable, unsure? Wait until both have been reviewed by people who have used them for a fortnight. There is no prize for buying first.
4. Buying an iPhone Ultra regardless? Budget for Apple's own case at launch and a properly fitted one a month later.

Which has the better camera?

On reported specs, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra — 200 MP main and a 10 MP 3× telephoto against a reported dual 48 MP with no telephoto. Apple's processing may narrow the gap in practice, but no processing substitutes for optical zoom.

Which is thinner?

The Z Fold 8 Ultra at 4.1 mm unfolded, against a reported ~4.5 mm. Both are thin enough that it is unlikely to change your decision.

Can I use a Galaxy Z Fold case on the iPhone Ultra?

No. Different folded footprint, different camera island, different hinge, different buttons. Nothing carries over in either direction.

When will iPhone Ultra cases be available?

Apple's own at launch. Third-party listings will appear immediately, but cases validated against a real retail unit typically take three to four weeks.

Is the iPhone Ultra the same thing as the iPhone Fold?

Yes. "iPhone Fold" is what the rumour cycle called it; reporting now points to iPhone Ultra as the likely name. Apple confirms on 9 September.

Should I wait for the Z Fold 9 instead?

If you are asking, probably yes. Samsung's cycle puts the next Z Fold around July 2027. There is always a better phone eleven months out — the question is whether you want a foldable now.

Where we land

The Z Fold 8 is the better-specified device and the safer purchase today, mostly because it exists and you can protect it properly. The iPhone Ultra is the more interesting one, and for anyone already inside Apple's ecosystem it is probably the right call despite the spec deficit.

What we would not do is buy an iPhone Ultra on 9 September expecting to protect it properly in September. That part takes longer than the marketing will suggest.
